Cecil P. "Buddy" Hall, born May 29, 1945, in Metropolis, Illinois, was more than a pool player - he was a legend whose skill, passion, and humility left an indelible mark on the sport. Known as "The Rifleman" for his unmatched precision, Buddy rose from humble roots to become one of the greatest nine-ball players in history. His legacy, built on a remarkable career and a generous spirit, continues to inspire players and fans alike.

A Legendary Career

Buddy’s love for pool began at 14 in a small-town soda shop in Metropolis, Illinois where he first picked up a cue stick. What started as a spark of curiosity ignited a lifelong passion. By his twenties, he was a professional, commanding tables with a blend of artistry and intensity that captivated all who watched. His career, spanning decades, was defined by over 100 professional tournament victories, including the prestigious U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships in 1991 and 1998.

One of Buddy’s most iconic moments came during the 1991 U.S. Open semi-finals against number-one-ranked Johnny Archer. Trailing 7-1, Buddy staged a comeback for the ages, running eight consecutive racks with surgical precision to secure a victory that left the pool world in awe. Archer himself later declared, "Buddy in the game of Nine-ball was: 'The best I've ever seen, the best I've ever played.'" This moment encapsulated Buddy’s brilliance, and his ability to turn the impossible into reality through sheer skill and determination.

Buddy’s accolades are a testament to his dominance: he was named Player of the Year in 1982, 1991, 1997, and 1998, and in 2000, and he was rightfully inducted into the Billiard Congress of America's Hall of Fame. Yet, his contributions extended beyond titles. Buddy revolutionized nine-ball with his innovative "clock system," a cue-ball control technique that transformed how players approached the game. This method, still taught and used today, is a cornerstone of modern pool strategy, cementing his influence on the sport’s evolution.

In his own words, Buddy’s success stemmed from love, not labor: "I just worked hard. I played a lot of pool, and I wasn’t playing like it was a job. I was playing for the fun of it because I loved to play." This passion fueled his relentless pursuit of excellence and made every match a masterclass in pool.

A Man of Heart and Humility

Beyond the felt, Buddy Hall was a man of profound warmth and generosity. A devoted family man, he cherished his loved ones. Despite his fame, Buddy remained grounded, always approachable, and eager to share his wisdom with aspiring players. Whether mentoring a young talent or chatting with fans, he embodied the spirit of pool as a community, not just a competition.

Buddy’s love for the game was infectious. He didn’t play for glory alone but for the joy o the challenge and the connections forged over countless tables. His humor, kindness, and genuine curiosity about others made him a beloved figure, as much admired for his character as for his cue work.

A Lasting Legacy

Buddy Hall’s life was a testament to what it means to live with passion and purpose. On the table, he was a titan, redefining nine-ball with his skill and innovation. Off the table, he was a mentor, a friend, and a family man whose heart was as big as his talent. His "clock system" continues to guide players, and his legendary matches remain the stuff of pool lore.

As we celebrate Cecil P. "Buddy" Hall, we honor not just a champion but a man who lived for the game and the people he touched along the way. His legacy endures in every perfectly placed shot, every lesson shared, and every smile he inspired. The Rifleman’s aim was true, and his impact will never fade. In Loving Memory (May 29, 1945 - May 22, 2025)

Rest In Peace, dear friend. You will be missed.
